The Holidays Are Close at Hand Marking the arrival of one of the most popular times at the Museum, Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Lightreturn to our halls on November 17, highlighting the rich customs of more than 40 countries and cultures and celebrating the golden age of travel. More than 50 trees and displays decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s diverse communities tell the story of holiday traditions from across the globe, and this year we’re aiming the spotlight at the Pioneer Zephyr train and Take Flight’s 727, which have been newly reimagined. You might also grab a photo with a certain jolly man in a red suit! A special holiday thank you to Envy™ apples, the sponsor of the opening day celebration and our Member Holiday Evenings. The 79th year of this annual celebration runs through January 3, 2022. |
Science Works We were thrilled to welcome back our friends in the professional community on October 9 for the return of Science Works. Fifteen companies, organizations, associations and schools joined us for skill-based volunteer programs led by 52 STEM professionals who engaged with the public about exciting and diverse career opportunities in their fields. Their audience included 227 students from area schools who learned about pathways to success in science and technology careers. We are particularly grateful to our corporate donors who volunteered their time and experience to help inspire and motivate our children to reach their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine. Thank you to HBK Engineering, Invenergy, Nicor Gas and USG for joining us for Science Works and for your ongoing commitment to science education. Contact dulce.enriquez@msichicago.org for information on how to participate in next year’s event. |
Science Minors Clubs We recently completed our Fall 2021 curriculum for training out-of-school-time educators. We worked both virtually and in-person with around 80 educators to introduce them to the “Superhumans Unite!” suite of lessons, which include lesson plans and experiments on magnetism, the engineering design cycle, building electric circuits, 3D imagery and even the narrative structure of comic books. These educators now have the materials and training to facilitate these fun activities for up to 20 participating students. A huge thank you to our partners at Wintrust, whose support makes it possible to provide valuable educator training, and opens the doors to partnerships with organizations in the out-of-school space and opportunities to create unique program offerings to serve the needs of individual schools and communities. |
