Octave Chanute was a civil engineer who designed the Chicago Union Stock Yards and built the first bridge across the Missouri River. He became interested in aviation after watching a hot air balloon take flight. He designed gliders and conducted flight experiments along Lake Michigan's shores. The Wright brothers even modeled Kitty Hawk after a Chanute biplane. Chanute had this glider model built in 1894 from his sketches before building it full scale.
