A message from Chevy Humphrey, President and CEO

It is with heavy heart that I share the news that Andrew McKenna, Griffin MSI Trustee and a giant of Chicago business, civic, education, and sports culture died Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 93.

Andrew McKenna served on the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry Board, starting in June 1989, and was Chair from 1996 to 1999. He has been an invaluable friend of the Museum for decades. Few people have had a larger impact on Griffin MSI than Andrew McKenna. His guidance helped Griffin MSI make sound business decisions and kept us focused on advancing education, youth development, and entrepreneurship-causes he held dear. Andrew was a guiding light for Griffin MSI and for all of Chicago. I am honored to have served with him and blessed to have learned from him and to be mentored by him, as have generations of other Chicago business and civic leaders.

In addition to his service to Griffin MSI, Andrew was a director on multiple corporate boards, including those of Aon Corp. and McDonald's, and he was Lead Director at Ryan Specialty. He was Chairman of the University of Notre Dame's Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2000 and was Vice Chairman for six years before that. He served on many civic, community, and philanthropic boards, including the Economic Club of Chicago, which he chaired. He was also chairman of the Commercial Club of Chicago and a member of that organization's Civic Committee.

More of his life and influence is outlined in a profile published last evening in Crain's Chicago Business, which referred to Andrew as many of us knew him, as a "consummate networker" and an "inexhaustible dynamo."

I will be working with my leadership team, Board Trustees, and the McKenna family over the coming weeks to identify meaningful ways for Griffin MSI to honor his legacy, including at our next Board meeting.

Sincerely,
