Message from the President and CEO
Science and technology are critically important to human well-being, economic growth and a sustainable environment. In a technology-driven world, America's social and economic future depends on new generations of scientists who can help sustain our legacy of innovation and science leadership. Climate change, energy, human health, security and hunger are just a few of the challenges that face humankind in the 21st century. Scientific breakthroughs will be even more important in the future to overcoming these challenges.
The Museum of Science and Industry has a unique and powerful opportunity to help shape the future. As a world-renowned science museum, we have already started a momentous effort to reach our vision- to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, medicine and engineering.
- We are taking a leadership role in improving the quality of science education by establishing the Center for the Advancement of Science Education at the Museum. The education programs created by the Center will reach children and teens in the community, provide training and tools for science teachers to improve the quality of classroom learning, and expand programming at the Museum, such as Live…From the Heart, where students speak with doctors via videoconference during a live open-heart surgery.
- We have undertaken the most aggressive exhibit development plan in our history. We are in the process of transforming nearly 90 percent of the Museum's exhibit space, including both spectacular new exhibits and re-energized legacy exhibits. And we have invited experts from across the country in a wide range of scientific and technological fields to help us.
- We are enhancing the guest experience to make it more comfortable and engaging to visit the Museum, and more fun and easy to participate online. For those that visit the Museum, we are creating fascinating new experiences, adding new and improved restrooms, making our building easier to navigate and cleaning the historic facade. We recognize that not all our guests interact with us in the building. An enhanced Web presence, which includes hands-on science experiments and lets kids interact with exhibits, is an important way to reach younger generations growing up in a virtual world.
We invite you to support our important work with a contribution to the Science Rediscovered capital campaign. Through this $205 million fundraising effort, the Museum will help new generations experience science and technology as exciting, rewarding career choices that help strengthen our economy and our society.
